The Society of Christian Apologetics was founded in November of 2010 with the goal of increasing the interest in apologetics among Christians and facilitating the community of apologists in the greater Phoenix Arizona metropolitan area. The impetuous for starting this group was the visit by JP Moreland to Red Mountain Community Church.

Joseph Ivy

I have been studying and applying Apologetics since 2001. It has proved to be a valuable mindset for evangelism, teaching, and personal spiritual health. My ministry background includes serving in children’s church as a teacher, serving on media teams, a little acting in plays, street ministry, mentoring college students, and founding/organizing this group. Apologetics has proven for me to be a natural and effective expression of my relationship with God. I have a desire to aid Christians in developing a better thought-out and lived-out Christian faith.

I have earned an Associate degree from Glendale Community College, a Bachelor’s degree in Business Leadership from Arizona State University, and a Master’s degree in Educational Leadership from Northern Arizona University. I have worked for the Maricopa Community College District since 1996. I am a member of Without Walls Church in Mesa, AZ.

Michael Mumpower

Apologetics is my passion. God used J.P. Moreland’s book Love God with all Your Mind to change my life in August of 2001. I have not looked back. Since that time I have read and study over 1,000 books and articles on the subject. In 2010, Joseph and I founded Apologetics Arizona. We have been meeting monthly ever since. God has truly blessed me through this ministry.

My academic and professional background is in accounting, specifically in tax. I once had a Pastor ask “Why a Tax Accountant would be interested in Apologetics?” I responded by saying my job is to take the tax law, one of the most theoretical codes ever written by mankind, and apply it practically tell my clients how much money they owe the government. Applied theory to the extreme!

This is my approach with Apologetics. Once we understand the theory, true and arguments behind what we believe, applying them becomes much more natural. It is akin to being told to obey because I said so, instead of understanding why I am obeying. I find the latter to be more effective.

Michael has worked at Arizona State University in Financial Services since 2009. He graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science in accounting from Arizona State University in 2007. A husband to Elizabeth since 2006 and currently has four children. Together they serve as licensed foster parents in the State of Arizona. Both are active member of Bethany Bible Church in Phoenix, AZ.
